Well, it finally happened. I won a big purse in an online tournament. I was really bored today and extremely tired (sounds like a great time to play a tourney), so I decided to see what was going on at partypoker. I had $200 in my account and have been getting really frustrated with the fact that I can't turn a big profit playing two 1/2 tables at a time. I have been dying for a bigger bankroll. Anyways, I saw this $30 speed tournament and seriously deliberated about not playing it, but gave in. There were about 350 people to start, and it was really a super-speed tournament, the blinds went up every 3 minutes!
Lightning strikes quick and I get dealt pocket jacks the second hand of the tournament in 6th position. The blinds are 10/15 and it is folded around to the guy in front of me who bumps it up to 250. I immediately push all in thinking this guy couldn't possibly have AA, KK, or QQ after raising more than 15 times the Big Blind. It is folded to him and he calls with AK. He gets no help and I knock him out and double up to 2000. I pick up a few small pots after that and I'm at about 2500 when I again get dealt pocket jacks. In this hand a guy with 325 chips goes all in as well as a guy with 825 chips, and I call them both all in. The flop is 5s Jh 6s. The turn is a Ts to give one guy a flush, but I river a 5h to make the boat and get up to about 3800 in chips.
There are now about 100 people left in the tournament and the blinds are getting freaking big. I get dealt 88 in late position and call a guy who goes all in for about 2500 in chips. He shows A8 and doesn't get any help and I move up to about 6500 in chips.
Now we get to the part where it doesn't even resemble a poker game. The blinds are getting raised so enormously that nobody has enough chips to post the big blind. My buddy Ali has arrived and is watching the lottery that is taking place in this "tournament". We are down to about 45 players and 40 advance. People are milking their time banks until the hand for hand period begins. Each hand is taking, no joke, about 5 minutes to play. Because we are at the point where nobody has enough chips to post the big blind (blinds are now at 50,000/100,000) that the winner is gonna come down to whoever gets the luckiest hand and the luckiest position. Since even tripling up won't get you enough chips to post the blinds, it is not even worth calling all in with Aces. You simply have to fold around until the blind reaches you and you are all-in, and hope that you beat the other blind heads up. Long story short, I got lucky, really really lucky, and at one point had the blind skip over me during a table change and got put on the button. I made the final table and again got very lucky, winning two of my forced all-ins and ended up finishing in 3rd place winning $1,050. It was the biggest win of my poker life so far and I only wish it could've been actual poker instead of a fucking lottery.
