9th out of 685 players....

Last night while watching yet another World Poker Tour rerun at Rick's, both of us decided to scratch our poker itch by playing some joint tournaments online. A little after 10 PM, we joined a $10+$1 satellite to the $75,000 "Weekend Whopper," which only drew about 45 entries....unfortunately, we got smoked pretty fast, so we decided to play in one of Pacific Poker's nightly $2300 guaranteed multitable tournaments.
The one we joined was a $5+$.50 buy-in, and it drew 685 entries. First place recieved $717 and change, while second was something like $500 or $600, etc. However, the dropoff was quite severe from there, as tenth place only recieved $51. Anyway, the tourney started at 11 PM, and Rick and I got off to a pretty good start. Soon we had built our stack up to one of the highest in the tournament, and we were also lucky to shake off a couple of big beats and some long stretches of miserable cards.
As the tournament wore on, Rick and I had great fortune on our all-ins; it seemed as though we were winning every race. Eventually, we reached the top 20, then the top 15, then the top 10....But it is important to add here that we were far from in control at this stage of the tournament. We had about 13K-17K in chips for most of our final level, but we also had two guys at our table that were stacked beyond belief: one had around 150K while the other had about 90K (we all started with T800 in chips).
What Rick and I wanted desperately was to make the final table, which would mean a finish in the top eight. Alas, it was not meant to be, as we, in ninth place and sitting in the small blind (1500-3000 blinds) with everyone folded behind us, moved all-in with 9-9, only to be called by the big blind who held A-A. Our tournament ended there, ninth out of 685, and one spot out of the final table (and with a relatively measly payout of $68). While Rick and I were dejected at first, today it really sunk in in terms of how good we actually did. So, in that regard, we can hold our heads high and look forward to the next multitable knowing that we are as capable as anyone else of taking one of those suckers home.
