A boost of confidence

Today Brian from MD-POKER.COM inquired about my multi-table online tournament skills. I told him I wasn't very confident and had made one 2nd place finish in a freeroll a while back but no other money finishes. He said he was starting a group with his forum buddies that planned on playing MTTs on various online sites and sharing a bankroll. I was very intrigued by this and so I got curious as to how well I can do in MTTs. So I played in a Party Poker $20 NL Hold 'Em multi-table tournament. Out of 1095 players I finished in 105th place -- just barely in the money. Although I made only a $4.28 profit, I definately had a good experience. I probably played the best online MTT poker I have ever played. The final hand I had AA and limped in hoping to reraise a late raiser. Blinds were 400/800 and I was in middle position. About 5 people limped and the flop came 2c3cQd. 1 check, 1 minimum bet, 1 fold, I reraise to $4500 hoping to get the pot right there or lessen the chance of an outdraw. Little did I know I was already beaten by the SB who limped in with 22. He raised all-in and of course I called for 4424 more chips -- all of my stack. No help on the turn or river and I go out in 105th. I made 2 mistakes during the whole tournament. The first one cost me a lot of chips. I was SB and limp in with K8o! ?? Why I did this I do not know. It was one of those "hey its only a little more I might as well call." The problem is, you might make top pair but you could quite possibly be outkicked. Also, you have almost no chance for a straight or a flush. Anyway, I hit a K on the flop, I bet a sizeable amount, 2 callers. Turn comes with no real scare situations so I bet again. 1 caller. River comes and again no scare situations so I bet out another sizable bet. I get called AGAIN. The guy flips over 63. He had a pair of 3's on the flop and made his 2 pair on the river. As much as I want to hate that guy, it was my fault for being in the hand to begin with. My second mistake happened a couple of times I think. Betting into a multi-handed pot with nothing to back it up. This may be alright in a live tournament if I get weak reads from people but online it is not a good idea. I need to keep telling myself this. People will call when they shouldn't. So even I make the right play and represent something better than their hand, they will often call anyway. When playing online, play the cards straight up. With a little more practice, I think I might be able to join Brian's group.
