You should support independent music. You can start by reading this review, then going here to hear samples of tracks and maybe buy the album. And, after that, check out their new release.
Why should you do these things? Because there is a whole universe of music out there that you'll never hear if you only listen to the industry-backed music pushed on you by the big record labels. I'm not saying that your favorite radio station's forty-song playlist is full of crappy music. Not by any means -- no matter how you pretty it up, you can't sell totally rotten product.
But, for every top 40 hit, there are 100 more just as good that are just lost in the crowd. The nice thing is, the Internet brings us all a very cheap, consumer driven distribution channel for media. On radio and TV there's only so much bandwidth, so only the stuff that is most likely to appeal to the lowest common denominator is ever broadcast.
The Internet has enough room and enough bandwidth for every songwriter, musician, or singer to publish quality product with minimal budget. Of course, without marketing power, most of them are just part of a babble of voices, and the rest of us are left with the same old short playlists on radio stations.
That's where word-of-mouth comes in. That band I linked to above are personal friends of mine. I love their music. They love creating it, and they love performing it live around their home town. I'd like for you to have the opportunity to experience their music and, if it suits you, to develop a fondness for it as well. Each of their albums is a collection of superb songs, and should you decide you like the samples and want to buy, you won't regret the purchase.
And, unlike major record label product, with indie music the artists keep the majority of the proceeds, since there is no hungry marketing and distribution channel to feed. This enables them to keep on doing what they love, even though they only manufacture a couple thousand or so copies of albums they create.
