Avatar
The word 'avatar' is generally used to describe some kind of icon that is used to represent a real person in a virtual world – the figures round the pokerroom tables, for example, though they'd be even more avatar-y if you could upload some kind of personal icon to replace the standard ones, or stick your own face on the standard bodies.
The word comes from India's spiritual tradition. In the Sanskrit language, an Avatara refers to a material manifestation of (a) god; gods may have many aspects to their personalities, and each Avatara is a reflection of one of those aspects. So in Hinduism, Krishna, Lord Rama and Narasimha are all Avatars of the one same supreme being, each with a different and particular mission on this earth, and with different physical forms that reflect different aspects of that supreme being. Up and down
...like the Assyrian empire. It's a quote from Monty Python's 'Life Of Brian', final scene. Brian is being crucified along with several other local citizens.
Mr Cheeky: "See? Not so bad, once you're up. You being rescued, then are you?"
Brian: "It's a bit late for that now, isn't it?"
Mr Cheeky: "Oh, no, no. We've got a couple of days up here. Plenty of time. Lots of people get rescued."
Brian: "Ohh?
Mr Cheeky: "Oh, yeah. My brother usually rescues me, if he can keep off the tail for more than twenty minutes."
Brian: "Ahhh?"
Mr Cheeky: "Randy little bugger. Up and down like the Assyrian Empire. Heh heh heh heh. Hello. Your family arrived, then?"
Brian: "Reg!"
Reg: "Hello, sibling Brian."
