Might as well types these out, both to help remember them and to have a place to look at them. They are more for online poker games, but the apply somewhat in live situations.
1. Play within your bankroll. Some say 200 big bets. Some say 300BB. Never go below 150BB.
2. Cut your losses. Once you loose 75BB, you no longer care how much you lose, so you play badly. Call it a session, and go do something else.
3. Don't go on tilt. More importantly, don't go up in limits to try to make up for a day's losses. Quit while the reduction in bankroll is still manageable.
4. Play only your best game, which (usually) means play only premium hands
5. Avoid sharks and look for fish. Once you spot them, mark them.
6. If you aren't going to win, fold.
7. Go easy on the bluffing online. Only do it if you are very sure the other guy will fold, which isn't often.
8. Don't chase without getting good odds. Not break even odds, good odds.
9. Take notes on people. Even if it is just shark/fish, 1-10, and the limits.
10. Go easy on tournaments until you have made some money. Like maybe until you have made twice the buy in through cash games.
11. Keep getting better. Sometimes that means reading a book. Sometimes that means going over stats. Sometimes that means taking a break. Just actively always try to improve.
