When did racism become unacceptable?
Wednesday, August 24 04:17:21 AM 2005
I remember when I was a kid, many years ago, being called paki was a daily occurrance. Not just be other kids, but the occasional adult as well. If another child called you a paki in the schoolyard, you couldn;t tell the teacher or anyone about it, they wouldn't care. In high school, all the dark skinned people hung out together, not because we were all friends, but because as a group we could offer each other protection. Their was the odd loner, who would get picked on because of their skin color, but even they eventually 'joined' the group. Unfortunately, this loose group of people would eventually evolve into thugs and drug runners, and are now no longer offering each other protection, rather they are shooting and killing each other. The original intent of why the informal group came to be has devolved into thuggery and disrespect. I thnk the reason for this is also because racism has become so unaceptable. If my son were to face racial slur today, a complaint to the school would not go ignored. The person makig the comment would be severely disciplined. Also, in my son's class, there are more minorities, which I guess means they are no longer in the minority. Some of the most educated people now are minoritoes, including doctors, lawyers, accountants, dentists and engineers. When you watch TV now, a good portion of the time when a doctor is being interviewed, they are Chinese, East Indian, or some other background. It is these people that have helped make racism unacceptable, by working hard and pushing their children into the best universities, thus making them more influental upon society. I'm still trying to remember the day when it became unacceptable, I would think very early 90's sometime. Shows that we can all move forward.
